Blessings to Count
Early one Sunday morning just recently I took the opportunity to make a list - no, not a Christmas list! Rather, a list of things for which I am thankful. I don't quite know what possessed me to do such a thing; perhaps it was just a simple way to "count my blessings," and offer a prayer of thanksgiving to God. Whatever the reason, I put pen to paper and was immediately surprised to discover a wealth of thanksgivings:
" I am thankful for my wife, and the love, care, and steadiness she offers.
" I am thankful for my children, who offer their love to me without reservation - fully, completely.
" I am thankful for this world, my place in it, and the opportunity to serve.
" I am thankful for the encouragement and good will I receive from so many people.
" I am thankful for a Christian community to call home, that feeds my soul.
" I am thankful for all the blessings I have received.
" I am thankful for challenges, that remind me of my dependence on God.
" I am thankful for the gift of voice, to share what has been laid on my heart.
" I am thankful for Holy Scripture, the Word of God: an incredible resource, worthy of study, that guides my life.
" I am thankful for good health, that allows me to live my life and serve without hesitation.
" I am thankful for music.
" I am thankful for the sacraments, those sure and certain signs of God's grace, that feed me and sustain me.
" I am thankful for prayer, the power to communicate with God when I have no power of my own.
" Above all, I am thankful to God, who knows me, cares for me, listens to me, forgives me, guides me, and empowers me.
As I write this, we are at the end of November, preparing for the Thanksgiving holiday and looking forward to the Advent and Christmas seasons. These occasions - Thanksgiving, Advent, Christmas - offer us an opportunity to look back and take stock of the year that has past. They are celebrations of who we are, where we've been, and what we are called to be and do. For the season, for the blessings, for the perspective, I say one thing: Thank you.
Blessings and Peace,
Fr. Aaron
